Rules of engagement

Warnings and challenges are not required for armed targets.

Warning shots and challenges are necessary prior to engagement.

Challenges and warning shots must be used prior to escalation.

Withdraw, and only return aimed shots if the conditions above are met. There must be clear line of sight. Random fire is prohibited.

Warning shots at civilians who do not heed repeated warnings.

Civilians may be engaged if they continue to provoke friendly forces, as they may be observers ('Dickers') or bombers.

Buildings and compounds may be used as fighting positions.

Buildings suspected of having insurgents may be entered.

Buildings may not be entered except for long-term occupation.

Use of explosives to engage structures is authorised.

Destruction of a building is authorised only when assault is too costly, and only when the conditions above have been met.

Use of explosives against structures is prohibited. Only the Tp Comd may authorise.

Fields and other terrain may be used to travel point to point.

Limited movement through fields. Stick to roads.

Roads must be used for travelling, and patrol routes kept to.

'Soft' headwear is worn unless the situation dictates.

Weapons are lowered.

CAS may use full ordnance, up to 500 lb, in rural areas.

CAS is limited to guns in rural areas.

CAS is limited to a 'show of force', unless authorised by the Tp Comd.
